To build moms who are confident in their motherhood, empowered as working women, and challenged through sisterhood to be the best version of themselves.

To provide a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment where both mom and child can learn together, grow together, and build community together through early childhood lessons and activities, on-the-job training, and classes and workshops tailored for personal and professional development. 

Unfortunately, many mothers today find themselves struggling to raise children alone. Needless to say, many are stressed and stretched to capacity, forced with having to fill both parental roles with little to no support.

Cheray Gardison, director and founder of MommieWorks Inc., found herself at the age of eighteen in the same situation. Here is her story:

"After growing up on welfare in a single-parent home with my mom, I told myself I never wanted that for my life. But right after graduating high school I found out I was pregnant.

 Once my daughter was born, I decided I was not going to keep making that same mistake. So, I made up in my mind to be responsible and make responsible choices. However, it felt like the more I tried doing what was right, the harder life got for me.

After refusing to continue in the toxic relationship with my daughter’s father who had been my high-school sweetheart, he took it upon himself to punish me for my decision. One day, after taking the city bus to his house so that he could watch our daughter while I went to work, he tried to coax me back into a relationship with him. Knowing how desperately I needed his help, when I rejected his advances, he rejected me by slamming the door in our faces after sharing a few unkind words.

For a moment, I stood frozen in disbelief. Honestly, I couldn't even believe I was in that situation in the first place. For the most part, I'd been a smart young lady. But there I was, standing on his porch in the rain with my 3-month child left to figure out how I was going to take care of both of us on my own.

 Through a foggy lens of tears I found a pay-phone, called my job and sobbed profusely as I explained how I could not find a reliable sitter. Days later, I had no choice but to head down to the welfare building, the very building I told myself I would never go in again!"


Despite what many may think, there are young women in low-to-moderate communities who made a few mistakes but really want to change their lives around for the better. The MommieWorks program was designed for moms like these.

The purpose of the MommieWorks program is to give disadvantage moms the opportunity to have daily, quality involvement with their children without having to worry about whether their children are safe or how they are going to make a living. It also seeks to allow these moms the opportunity to learn relevant life skills like managing their homes, financial literacy, conflict resolution, and healthy collaboration.

This program is not for women who just want things easy. It's designed for those who are willing to learn, to be challenged with responsibilities and accountability, and for those willing to work as a team support and a team player.
